Craig McDonald, a college professor in Bristol, Virginia, writes historical novels set in ancient Palestine and medieval Scotland.
I developed a new website for Craig, and designed covers for his books. The site - which has now been retired - was a simple but richly illustrated site, employing imagery and typefaces that convey the rich atmosphere of Craig's novels.
Each book's dedicated page was headlined with an illustration comprising graphic elements that indicate the setting and narrative of each book. All of the site's other pages - Reviews, Contact and About - had their own custom illustrations, appropriate to the subject of the page. The elements were sourced from Old Master paintings, photographs, textures and elements from my own collection. They were put together with Photoshop, using layers and custom filters. Care was taken to select a typeface complementing the site's antiquarian ambience: we chose IM Fell's English.
The site was coded using HTML5 and CSS, and is integrated with the WordPress content management system, allowing Craig to add new books and reviews.
